Best time to visit Komodo by boat: sea, visibility, mantas and crowds by month

Updated 10 October 2026

The best time to visit Komodo depends on what you want to see. April to June and October to November give the calmest sea and the clearest water. Mantas peak December to February and July to September, in rougher conditions. Vinca sails 3D2N open trips on Monday & Friday from IDR 6,950,000 (≈ USD 426) per person.

Twelve months, no bad one

There is no bad month in Komodo, only months suited to different trips. The dry season runs from April to November. The wet season runs from December to March. Within those two blocks, three things move: the sea, the underwater visibility and the number of boats at each anchorage.

The matrix below sets them against each other for every month. Read across, not down. A month with calm seas and high visibility can have fair odds at mantas, and a month with the best odds can have the worst crossing.

What the matrix is: general operator knowledge for Komodo National Park, not a forecast and not measured data. What it is not: a promise about any single week. Tides, current and local wind change from day to day, and the park authorities can restrict sites at short notice. Use it to choose a month, then let the captain choose the day.

Calm water: April to June, October and November

April, May and June are dry, calm and clear. Visibility is high, seas are gentle, and the crowds are medium. For a first-timer, a nervous sailor or a family with children, these are the months we would pick. The south-east wind starts to build toward the end of June.

October and November give the same calm and a different crowd. October is hot and quiet compared with July and August. November is the end of the dry season, with clear water, flat seas and the quietest sites of the year. Sunrise at Padar falls around 05:31 in November, so the wake-up is early. Short nights, then.

The cost of calm is mantas. In these months the odds at Manta Point are fair, not good. If mantas are the whole reason you are coming, read the next section before you book.

Mantas: December to February, and July to September

Manta season is best roughly from December to February and from July to September. Both are real peaks, and each comes with a price.

December to February is wet. The sea is at its roughest, rain is heavy and visibility is the lowest of the year, though sites are quiet. July and August are dry but windy, and they are the busiest months: expect company at Padar and Pink Beach, and a boat with no stabilisers will move more than you want.

September is the compromise. Winds ease, visibility is high again, and mantas are still around, with crowds at medium. If a fixed date is not forcing your hand, September gives the best mix.

Mantas are wild animals. We say best odds, never guaranteed, and so should anyone else. The current at Manta Point is strong, snorkelling there is guided, and a life jacket is advised for weaker swimmers.

Padar sunrise moves through the year

You leave the boat about 65 minutes before sunrise for the Padar climb, so the wake-up time follows the sun. Sunrise falls around 06:18 in July and 05:31 in November. That is close to an hour of difference. It decides whether your first coffee is at 04:30 or at 05:15.

The climb to the main viewpoint takes 25 to 45 minutes, and the upper ridge takes longer. The path is loose and steep in places, so sturdy shoes matter more than a good camera. A headtorch helps in the dark first half of the climb.

The table below gives the sunrise time for every month at the viewpoint, so that you can work out when to be on the tender. It is calculated from the coordinates, not copied from a travel blog.

Sunset and the bats at Kalong

Sunset at Kalong falls between about 17:49 and 18:27 depending on the month. The flying foxes leave the mangroves about 15 minutes after sunset and stream out over roughly half an hour. You watch them from the boat. Kalong is not a landing stop.

Arrive early. If you arrive at sunset, you will miss the first of the bats. The 2D1N, 3D2N and 4D3N each end a day at Kalong. The day trip does not visit at all.

A long lens helps, and a charged camera helps more. Between the last light and the last bat is about 45 minutes of waiting on the sundeck, which is the point. The table below gives the sunset time for every month, so you can see how the evening moves from 17:49 to 18:27 across the year.

Months we would not send a nervous sailor

Vinca has no stabilisers. In January and February, when the sea is roughest, and in July and August, when the wind is up, a cabin on the upper deck will move more than a first-timer enjoys. The lower deck moves least, and the engine is loudest there. That is the trade.

The supplier's calendar is thin in the same months: a single departure in January and none in February. If you are prone to seasickness and your dates are in those months, we are the wrong boat unless you accept a cabin on the lower deck and a tablet before every night crossing.

For everyone else, the right question is not which month is best but which month matches the trip. Quiet water, clear snorkelling, mantas or a fixed date: pick one, then ask the desk about the next departure, which is Monday, 12 October 2026.

FAQ

Which month has the clearest water for snorkelling?

April to June and September to November have high visibility. October and November combine it with calm seas and lighter crowds than July and August. January and February have the lowest visibility of the year. A 3D2N in a clear month runs from IDR 6,950,000 (≈ USD 426) per person on the open trip.

Should I sail between December and March?

Yes, if you want mantas and quiet sites and can accept rough water and low visibility. The wet season runs from December to March, and it is manta season from December to February. Open-trip dates are thin: one in January and none in February, so for those months plan on a private charter from IDR 100,000,000 (≈ USD 6,135).

When are the Komodo anchorages busiest?

July and August are the busiest months, and late December is busy with holiday travellers. Expect more boats at Padar and Pink Beach in those weeks. October and November are lighter, with the quietest sites of the year arriving in November.

How much does the Padar wake-up time change between July and November?

The sunrise at the viewpoint moves from 06:18 in July to 05:31 in November. You leave the boat about 65 minutes before it, so your alarm moves by the same margin. The climb itself takes 25 to 45 minutes to the main viewpoint.

Is September a good compromise month?

Often, yes. Winds ease, visibility is high again, and mantas are still around, while crowds sit at medium. It sits between the busy July and August and the calm October. The open trip has several September departures, starting from IDR 6,950,000 (≈ USD 426) per person.
